Study Program
USU has 13 faculties / schools of Medicine, Law, Agriculture, Engineering, Dentistry, Economics, Literature, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Political Science, Public Health, Pharmacy, Psychology, and Pg. The number of courses offered as many as 101, consisting of eight doctoral level, 28 masters, 15 specialists, five professions, 50 degrees, and 15 diplomas. The number of registered students are currently more than 32,000 people, 688 of whom are foreign students.

Overview
Since its founding, USU prepared at the center of higher education in the Western Region of Indonesia. When founded in 1952, USU is a foundation, then switched its status to a state university in 1957, and subsequently changed to PT-BHMN in 2003.

Rector Bureau

USU has a vision to become the University for Industry (UFI), with a mission: (1) prepare students to become members of the public morals and the academic ability and / or professional and / or vocational to apply, develop and enrich the science, technology and art, (2 ) develop and disseminate science and arts based primarily on the cooperation of industry, and application development to improve the welfare of society and enrich the national culture, and (3) support the development of a democratic civil society through USU role as an autonomous moral force to achieve a strong ability in the global competitive environment through professional management of human resources, widening participation in learning, to meet national needs in learning, and learning how to modernize.

USU campus is located in Padang Bulan, a green and shady areas covering 120 ha located in the center of Medan. Academic zone covering 90 ha accommodate almost all college activities and practicum students. Learning system supported by the library facilities and more than 200 laboratories. Library provides various types of learning resources both in print and electronic form. USU Library is one of the best in Indonesia today. Campus Padang Moon is also supported by information technology infrastructure to facilitate access to various information resources and knowledge to support the process of learning and research students and lecturers.

Library Atmosphere

Also on campus there are also many facilities such as dormitories, the gymnasium, guest house, cafeteria, shops, banks and post offices. Graduation, and other academic events held at the Auditorium, and Student Center. A teaching hospital will be built at the campus location in 2008.

A new campus area of 300 ha located in Kwala Bekala, located 15 kilometers from Padang Bulan Campus is being developed, which is currently used to support various research and experimentation in agriculture, forestry, plantation and husbandry. In an effort to develop themselves as far-reaching university, USU manages experimental field covering approximately 550 hectares in Langkat. USU also has obtained a development permit pilot area of 10,000 ha of forest in Mandailing Natal.

Competitive Advantage
Beginning with the opening of medical schools, USU positioned itself as a leading university. The process of education and research involving 1680 people lecturers, 78% of whom have a background in graduate education. Until now, USU has more than 103 000 alumni are spread all over the country. A number of alumni occupy key positions in various employment sectors, both governmental and private.

Study programs in health, such as Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy currently be excellent for foreign students especially from Malaysia. Study Program at Faculty of Mathematics and Science and Agriculture became the spearhead various research activities and community service. Ethnomusicology Studies Program has the particularity of ethnic music in Sumatra. Faculty of Law and Social Sciences Faculty of Political Science and has been deeply involved in the development of legal and administrative arrangements. A water purification products - Ferro Filter - lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering's findings are being processed for patent rights, has been widely used in various parts of Sumatra.
