Indonesia-Japan Earthquake Hazards Reduction Strive

Indonesia and Japan are two countries which are both frequently rocked by earthquakes of the Earth. Based on the similarity "fate", the Institute of Sciences of Indonesia (LIPI) and the Ministry of Research and Technology (RISTEK) in collaboration with Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) and Japan Science and Technology (JST) initiated a program to reduce earthquake hazards.

Multi-Disciplinary Program in Earthquake Hazard Reduction and Volcano in Indonesia is an effort to reduce the dangers caused by the earthquake and volcanology. Research cooperation between Japan and Indonesia are planned to continue for three years from 2009 to 2012, covering six disciplines, namely earthquakes, volcanoes, geological engineering, social, educational and government policies.

According to Deputy of Earth Sciences, Hery Harjono in the Office of LIPI, Jl. Raden Saleh 43, Jakarta Pusat, Monday (3/22/2010), the main focus of this research is to find a solution to the problem of earthquake disaster management in particular tectonics, volcanology and tsunami. Later, the solution of the problem comes from the evaluation research that has been executed.

"The results of research from every field of science that has been mentioned above will be down to one thing, namely government policies so that people realize that disasters are part of life," said Hery.

The results of this research will be used also to increase the research capacity of earthquake, tsunami and volcanic disaster management so that efforts continue to synergize with other disciplines to reduce the risk of disaster itself.

Own research program is divided into six groups based on their respective disciplines, namely forecasting earthquakes and tsunamis, volcanic eruption forecasting, development of engineering infrastructure based disaster information, improving community preparedness in order to mitigate social vulnerabilities, education and counseling as well as coordination with the government.
